Now Viewing: full_metal_panic!Tag type: Copyright フルメタル·パニック! Covers the whole series. It is often abbreviated as FMP. It is a mecha action romance series created by Gatoh Shoji. The original light novels ran from September 9, 1998 to August 20, 2011. It has also been adapted into anime with the first season done by Gonzo in 2002 and Fumoffu! and The Second Raid animated by Kyoto_Animation in 2003 and 2005 respectively. The fourth season Invisible Victory was animated by Xebec in 2018. Gatoh would go on to work with the animators who adapted this series on other anime projects; Gatoh wrote the screenplay for The Tower of Druaga anime with Gonzo and would also write the scripts for quite a few Kyoto Animation adaptations like Hyouka. The series is set in an alternate universe that resembles the late 20th-early 21st century except for the fact that mechs exist and the Cold War has never ended. Sagara Sousuke is a serious and highly competent teen soldier and member of the international anti-terrorist group Mithril who has no problem handling life and death battles. He gets his most difficult and awkward assignment yet when he's assigned to go undercover as a high school student to protect Chidori Kaname because she is being targeted by various organizations that seek the special knowledge she possesses. Sousuke has never had a normal social life and often makes a fool of himself, exasperating Kaname. Despite coming from two completely different social environments, the two teens' relationship gradually goes beyond bodyguard and the person being protected. Kaname's normal social life is also increasingly disrupted by various organizations attempting to capture or attack her. Things grow more difficult for the two budding lovers as events conspire to pull them apart. . . The series often shifts between gritty mecha action and wacky fish out of water antics involving Sousuke spectacularly failing to grasp social interaction amongst Japanese civilians. The anime even devotes an entire season to comedic antics (Fumoffu) and one season focusing on the action and plot (The Second Raid). Gatoh himself worked on adapting his own series into animation and wrote the screenplay for Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid. Gatoh envisioned Full Metal Panic! as his take on a Boy Meets Girl storyline. Even as the series' story grew more complex, he made sure to always keep "Boy Meets Girl" as the dominant story thread. The series' characters and mechs have also appeared in Super Robot Wars. The anime adaptation of Lucky Star features quite a few jokes and references to this series. The series has spawned a spinoff novel series titled Full Metal Panic! Another, which is written by Ooguro Naoto and drawn by Douji_Shiki. Although Gatoh isn't involved with said spinoff, he is writing the manga Full Metal Panic! Zero, which began on September 20, 2013 and is still ongoing. Gatoh's next, otherwise unrelated, series Amagi_Brilliant_Park has a reference to this series in the form of a character who looks almost exactly like FMP's mascot Bonta-kun called Moffle. The character's nearly identical appearance is a running joke as he is often derided by other characters as a rip-off, which he does not take kindly to.
